Tagline: There was no quiet on the Western Front for the heroes and cowards who flew to their rendezvous with Hell!
Plot Outline:    WWII. The 'Blue Max', a coveted medal for achievement in flying, is ruthlessly sought by Peppard, a poor-boy German soldier who climbs out of the trenches and into the aristocratic air force. He is met with prejudice by the other contestants, wealthy snobs who look down upon his low economic stature. When he claims the title, he earns the respect of the General and the General's wife (Andress), who wants to repay him in ways that the General might not appreciate. Peppard, on the other hand, does. Fantastic aerial combat highlights the film, although the scenes between the two lovers don't hurt matters much.

Trivia: "Stachel" is the German word for sting.
Goofs: Factual errors: The German Army is shown advancing in linear human waves against the British lines in the Ludendorff Offensive of 1918. In fact were really using new storm/infiltration tactics of small well trained and armed troopers. This is where the term "storm trooper" comes from.
Quotes: General Count von Klugermann : I'm afraid it's rather a small medal, Willi, but it's the highest Germany can give.
Awards: Won BAFTA Film Award. Another 4 nominations

What a cracking good film! Raunchy scenes with Ursula Andress , unusual for Sunday afternoon TV!, were *definitely* inserted to cater for a *male* audience; her bouncing towel scene was a delight! Some mention has been made of her dialogue direction under John Guillerman; it has to be remembered that Ursula, IIRC, was always dubbed (by the same actress), owing to her guttural Swiss accent. IMHO, though, none of this detracted from an excellent action movie, which, if it was made today, would probably be a CGI 'disposable movie'; I look forward to catching this one again!
And did I mention Ursula's towel scene? Corrrr! :D
