Comments:
The characters in this movie are the one thing that make it worth watching. Matthew Brodeick's character is his usual wiseass as he plays 20 year old Brooklynite Jerome just out of boot camp and serving in Mississippi (the worst place at that time for a New Yorker to be) during the final days of the big war. Christopher Walken was great in his usual psychotic role, playing a nicer and more sympathetic version of his "At Close Range" role as their Platoon Sergeant. One striking note of how close-minded thinking was in those days; the most down-to-earth and likable guy in their platoon just happened to be homosexual and payed a nasty price for it and was sent to the San Quentin of military prisons-Leavenworth. And a final word of note: if you look closely on the cover and read Eugene's blood type on his dog tags, it's B negative. In recent days, it's now been believed that a persons blood type is their personality, and Eugene fit the criteria for type B: unconventional, intelligent, empathetic, free-thinking, and difficult to manipulate.
