Very Good Western With Strong Cast & Enjoyable Characters, 4 November 2004

A decent western with an interesting story to begin with, the high-quality cast and enjoyable characters make "Rio Bravo" more than just a good western. The main "good guy" characters are a nice mix of personalities, and they are easy to pull for. It also doesn't hurt to have a gifted storyteller like Howard Hawks in command of it all.

John Wayne, Dean Martin, Walter Brennan, and Ricky Nelson make a very interesting combination, and except for Nelson, their screen presence is impressive. They always seem natural together, and they look at home in the situation. Even Nelson is adequate, and his character does get a few good moments. There are some very good scenes that simply involve their otherwise routine interactions with one another. Angie Dickinson and Estelita Rodriguez also make sure that the men don't get to have all the fun.

The story is often a bit far-fetched, but it's interesting and entertaining.

It's the kind of story that fans of classic westerns like to see, and in this case it is significantly aided by the extra life that the cast gives to it, and by Hawks's skilled craftsmanship. It's not hard to see why this has retained its place among the favorites of the genre.
