Plot Summary: Minkey, a super-spy primate, and
his partner Mike were the two best spies in the business. For years,
they made every mission possible... But when Mike retired to raise his
baby girl, Amelia, he never predicted that life would come full circle.
Ten years later, Amelia -- who has invented a revolutionary chemical
drill -- is kidnapped and whisked off to Japan by her hero, Dr. Farley,
who is planning a highly dangerous experiment that could cause a massive
earthquake and destroy the entire world. Mike and Minkey partner up one
last time for their most important mission ever: saving Amelia -- and
the world -- from the clutches of the evil Dr. Farley.

Apparently, the two best spies in the business are Mike (Chris
Potter) and his super primate partner Minkey. (I know. Just go with it!)
But the two have retired so that Mike could raise his genius daughter
Amelia (Emma Roberts). Amelia invented a chemical drill that gets her
kidnapped by the evil Dr. Farley (Richard Kind) who needs her drill for
a risky experiment that could destroy all existence! Mike and Minkey
join forces one more time to save Amelia and (as cliché as it is) the
world.
Let's face it Spymates is not going to get an Oscar or anything like
that. It was directed and co-written by Robert Vince who also directed
the Air Bud flicks and MVP: Most Valuable Primate 1 and 2 which also
starred the chimp made so famous in this film. Vince co-wrote the
screenplay with Anna McRoberts who he worked with on Air Bud: Seventh
Inning Fetch along with a number of other films.
I find it really interesting how the chimp is the real star of the
flick, but his name is no where to be found on the cover. Hmmmm...discriminatory
much? Okay, where shall I start? The story is cute and funny. If you
approach this film by taking everything literally, then you won't enjoy
it. You must suspend disbelief and go with all of the crazy antics. I
mean just look at the lead character, he is chimp who is a spy that can
do better stunts than his human counterpart. Sorry Potter, you got
served by a chimp.
This film was a nice stepping stone for Emma Roberts who has the
signature "Roberts" full lips and red hair and her performance was
actually fairly decent. She is certainly one to watch.
